Safe Technology

Are children using their learning devices safely? What are the health risks in using wireless devices like tablets, laptops, phones, and other screen devices for extended periods of time? What guidelines do scientists and pediatricians recommend for school age children? Are school environments equipped with powerful wireless routers safe for students?

In 2019, the Oregon state legislature passed SB 283 requiring the Oregon Health Authority to perform a meta-analysis of unbiased studies relating to the health risks of wifi radiation and wireless devices to children. The study that was originally due out in July of 2020 has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. PAA Oregon has taken the initiative to support and report on this very important issue. We will report on the results of the study as soon as it is published.

The health risks of electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones are now a proven scientific fact. Recently published long-term studies have added to concerns that cell phone radiation may be linked to various forms of cancer, including tumors of the ear and brain, gliomas, blastomas, and neuromas.  A broad range of other health risks have also been implicated.

Children and teenagers are five times more likely to get brain cancer if they use mobile phones. Their thinner skulls and rapidly dividing brain cells make them more at risk.

The American Academy of Pediatrics points out that youngsters receive two times the exposure that adults do in the brain and ten times in the bone marrow of the skull.

Developmental and behavioral problems in children could be linked to cell phone radiation exposure during pregnancy. These concerns have been raised by studies from Yale School of Medicine and the University of California, Los Angeles School of Public Health. Other studies have linked cellphone and WiFi use with behavior problems in children.

Some health risks for all of us include:

  • cancer

  • damage to the immune system ,

  • infertility,

  • dizziness,

  • nausea,

  • headaches,

  • fatigue,

  • v ision and eye problems,

  • sleep disturbance,

  • behavior problems,

  • and memory loss.

Regular hands-free headsets are not effective and can actually increase the amount of radiation penetrating your head by 300%, as the wire acts like an antenna.  By using a safe headset you can reduce the amount of radiation reaching your brain by up to 99%.

Many schools are now using WiFi and subjecting children to chronic full body exposure of microwave radiation. Measurements in several schools have found that the levels of radiation are actually higher in a classroom with WiFi than they would be right next to a cell phone tower.
